Class of 2017

Home district:
Guilderland Central School District

Post-graduation plans:
Andreea graduated from TVHS a semester early in December 2016, and enrolled at SUNY Polytechnic Institute. This fall, she will transfer to Brown University’s Program in Liberal Medical Education, an 8 year program that guarantees admission into medical school.

What are the most important things that you will take from TVHS into your next steps as an adult?
Having a well-rounded education was important so I could see the world from all aspects and connect better with other people. At the end of the day, that’s what is important. I have always been set on working in a STEM field because I want to be a doctor, but now I realize that’s not the only option. Just because you’re interested in STEM doesn’t mean you can’t explore humanities. Both fields are equally important, and it’s especially important in high school. It’s good to have a diverse background so you can communicate with all types of people.

What were the highlights of your experience at TVHS?
I-Term and the internships I did at GE and RPI were the highlights because it was my first introduction to working in the real world of science and research. It was really rewarding to see people in an actual career. We do a lot of model work at Tech Valley, but it’s different when you’re actually there. It’s one of the things that helped me get into college. I got experiences that most kids don’t get at a traditional school. I was the student ambassador for the governor’s Common Core Task Force. Experiences like that helped set me up for success.

I wouldn't have gotten into Ivy League schools if it wasn’t for Tech Valley. What’s important about this school is that they really do help you on your college applications to help you stand out.

Any advice for underclassmen?
If you want something, work to make it happen because nothing is set in stone. If you have a good idea of what you want to do, even if its nontraditional, don’t be afraid to try it.

What are your favorite memories of Tech Valley High?
The teachers and staff were very supportive, and they were always there to help out with classwork, or just to talk to make sure that I was doing well and on track. It was a very supportive environment.

If you could thank your home district for giving you the opportunity to attend TVHS, what would you say?
I’m really glad I was given this opportunity. I’m glad I was able to run track with Guilderland and stay involved in the school. It was important to me. The track coaches had no problem with me coming in late to practice because I had to travel from Tech Valley. They were flexible so I could be apart of the team.
