Is Tech Valley High School right for me?

What makes a successful TVHS student:

It is the goal of TVHS to meet the unique needs of all its learners, but we have found that students' tenures and successes are greater if they understand the following:

High school entry requirements: Student has met all requirements for entry into ninth grade or the grade level he or she is entering in the high school program.

Regents graduation requirements: Student has demonstrated the ability to graduate with a Regents diploma. As TVHS is a STEM-focused high school, successful completion of four years of math and science coursework is the expectation for all TVHS students. It is recommended to use the Grade 3-8 standardized test scores and other assessments used by local schools to assess the student's ability to meet this requirement.

Project-based learning: Students are required to work independently and collaboratively in groups. Students will be expected to accept personal responsibility for meeting expectations as a contributing member of projects-based teams. We have found that students who cannot meet the PBL requirements will not be successful at TVHS.

Incoming student data requirement: Local districts are required to submit all academic records and data in order for an application to be complete. TVHS staff may be in touch for additional information.

Student review process: Local school district guidance counselors should interview students, preferably with parents, using the interview guidance tool that is provided by TVHS. It provides questions to be asked, and it identifies student responses which demonstrate an encouraging outlook for the student at TVHS.

Special education requirements: In all cases, students' special needs should be identified, and the provisions of the most appropriate response and setting should primarily address these needs. Tech Valley High School is a diverse and STEM-focused school, and, as such, is prepared to address students with special needs with appropriate services within the scope of those services it provides. If additional services are required, this additional assistance will be billed to the home district.

Approval of application by home school district: Superintendents should have an internal process to approve submission of the application to TVHS that assures that all applications meet TVHS lottery guidelines.

The successful TVHS student:
• Must be willing to work collaboratively with other students and adults.
• Must be able to participate in classes at grade level with typical classroom or special education supports.
• Must be trustworthy.
• Should be interested in or comfortable with using technology.
• Should be curious.
• Must be open to new learning experiences and new types of learning environment.
• Must be willing and interested in taking four years of math and science courses, including upper level courses such as A2/Trig, Chemistry and Physics.
• Must be flexible with schedule and transitions between classes/activities.
• Should be willing to work on time management skills to improve.
• Should be open and willing to entertain different approaches or new ideas open to using laptops as a main platform for completing and submitting work.
• Should be interested in exploring big questions and finding potential solutions to larger problems as part of learning in courses.
• Should be able to build agency skills to become self-motivated and self-directed.
• Should understand and accept that there are no after school sports/extracurricular activities at TVHS, but that it may be possible to continue to participate in these activities through the home district.
• Must be willing to have classmates who live far away.
• Must be willing to be part of a culture built on trust, respect, responsibility and stewardship.
